Medicines & Mothers – NHS Education, Scotland

HSELanD Aurion Learning developed this Medicines and Mothers: Challenges in Breastfeeding e-learning programme for NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

Rates of breastfeeding are amongst the lowest in the UK and NES wanted to educate their staff in how to encourage higher rates of breastfeeding.

This engaging e-learning programme helps multi-disciplinary healthcare professionals (pharmacists, midwives, health visitors and nurses):

promote breastfeeding in a sensitive manner;
understand their role in supporting breastfeeding mothers;
gain a better understanding of the problems that might affect a mother during breastfeeding; and
gain a better understanding of the safe use of medicines in breastfeeding mothers.

Although this was a difficult programme to develop, having to meet the needs of a range of healthcare professionals, Aurion were able to assist us in developing and arranging the materials in a way that allowed practitioners to use the resource in a flexible manner dependent on their prior knowledge and experience. We had really positive feedback at the launch event and following on from this, with enquiries coming from elsewhere in the UK and abroad.
