Safehome4me - Health & Social Care

HSC Safehome4meFor this project, Aurion Learning developed an home safety e-learning programme for children aged 3 - 7 years.

Content was developed through a multi-disciplinary group from the health and education sector and designed to fit in with the main areas of personal, social and health education (PSHE) and citizenship set out in the Northern Ireland Curriculum for Foundation Stage and Primary School children.

Safehome4me.com is an interactive website designed especially for children in pre-school settings, nursery schools and primary schools, but it can easily be used by parents/carers at home too. It clearly illustrates the factors that can cause accidents in the home through watch and learn animations to consolidate the learning.

The website also includes a teacher/carer resource which covers a range of safety topics relevant to the home, and includes activity sheets, posters, leaflets and reports. It encourages discussion and further activities.

The website and resource pack were launched in March 2008 and have been profiled extensively through schools, early years networks and using regional advertising sources such as NI4Kids. Both teachers and early years workers have received induction seminars on the use of the website and the learning and development tools in the class room and early years settings.

The Trust has found the Safehome4me website to be an extremely useful way of engaging with young children and with their parents and teachers on understanding why accidents can happen in and around the home and how, with a few easy steps, they can be easily avoided.

The development of the website and teaching resource was a collaborative process between the Promoting Wellbeing Department within the Southern Trust and the team in Aurion Learning who worked very closely to ensure that the original vision of an interactive resource for children was maximised.
