All About Us - Family Planning Association

All About UsThe Family Planning Association (FPA) is a registered sexual health charity which champions the importance of good sexual health for everyone. It educates, informs, supports and campaigns for people across the UK.

FPA contracted Aurion Learning to develop a learning resource to educate people with moderate to medium learning disabilities about sex, relationships and sexual health. This was a big undertaking because the resource had to deliver very important learning content in a way that was sensitive and meaningful, yet easy for people with learning disabilities to understand. It was also the first time that such a resource had been developed.

Using the twenty years of specialist experience that FPA has in delivering relationships and sexuality education (RSE) to people with learning disabilities in the community, and Aurion’s online learning and technical expertise, the project team were able to produce the unique visual and interactive CD-ROM All about us.

All about us uses, words, pictures, animations and storylines to deliver learning content. It complements relationships and sexuality education (RSE) in the home, school, and other learning environments. Qualitative evaluation from people with learning disabilities, family carers and practitioners has been 100 per cent positive. Several countries have expressed an interest in translating it into different languages. Aurion Learning is currently adapting the resource to include British Sign Language.

Silver Award for Excellence: E-Learning Awards 2009.

Winner: Charity Award 2010.

This resource was developed in response to need identified by people with learning disabilities, their carers, support workers and professionals whom they encounter in their daily lives.  It was a challenge for FPA and Aurion to get it right in terms of content, design and accessibility.  The challenge would have not have been met if an effective and successful partnership between FPA and Aurion had not been established. A partnership which was underpinned by a commitment to people with learning disabilities.
