Two volunteers from Aurion Learning have connected with the Multiple Sclerosis Society Northern Ireland as part of Business in the Community’s Connect-Ability programme.
Andrew Mc Caughan, Software Developer and Aaron Mc Givern, Web Designer will be working with the MS Society and their clients over a six week period to deliver training on how to use the internet and get online.
Andrew McCaughan, Software Developer, Aurion Learning said: “This is a great opportunity to share my knowledge of computers and the internet with people who want to learn. It’s a thoroughly worthwhile experience and I would recommend all businesses in Northern Ireland to get involved.”
Connect-Ability, which is supported by the Department of Finance and Personnel and NI Direct starts in November 2011 and will run until February 2012, with the aim of helping adults with disabilities get online. Various other local organisations will have business volunteers coming in to their offices too, for example, Cedar Foundation, NOW Project, Orchardville Society, Mencap and Stepping Stones.
Basil Davidson, Digital Inclusion Manager Department of Finance and Personnel commented: “The Department is delighted to support such a unique and exciting opportunity as Connect-Ability. The efforts made by the business volunteers will ensure that a long and sustainable impact is made on those who currently feel excluded from using the computer.”
Hilary Hanberry, Volunteering Manager, Business in the Community, adds:
“Organisations and businesses who actively participate in challenges in the community can make a tremendous difference in a short period of time.
Volunteering is one way in which businesses can start to build real relationships and help to transform the communities they live and work in. Staff benefit too as it’s a valuable way to have fun, learn and develop new skills.”
