Aurion helps Nautical Institute chart a new course

16 April 2009

An innovative new online portal developed by Belfast’s Aurion Learning for the Nautical Institute, is set to help the international maritime industry tackle its major challenge in the coming years – the recruitment and retention of skilled seafaring professionals.

The industry, which faces a personnel shortfall of 80,000 across 110 countries by 2012, enlisted the help of the Belfast based online learning specialists Aurion to develop an e-Learning portal which would help international maritime personnel develop and plan their long term careers and meet future industry requirements for personnel across 110 countries.

The online continuing professional development (CPD) system is based on the Belfast company’s flagship CPDengage™ product and was unveiled by Aurion founder Dr Maureen Murphy and the Nautical Institute to the international nautical community at the prestigious International Maritime Organization (IMO) headquarters in London last week.
Peter Aylott, the Nautical Institute’s Director of Professional Development explained the vital role of the new online CPD system in helping retain valued professionals within the industry.

“This new CPD system will provide career guidance and help individuals chart their career paths over the longer term, identifying opportunities for advancement and career development – these are vital if we are going to succeed in retaining good people within our industry.”

The NI’s CPD system is a password protected web-based entity where individuals can record, plan and reflect on all their learning and development activities throughout the year whilst seeking practical guidance and support on their career development. Members will have access to features including a Personal Development Plan area, a ‘My Diary’ feature, CPD catalogue of programmes and events, a learning reflection area, a print centre, and a message centre.

The project launch has marked another milestone for Aurion, which has secured a series of high profile contract in the last six months, including the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE)’s online Learning Centre as well as new CPD portals for the Law Society of England Wales and the Business Continuity Institute.
